Testing

ISTEP TESTING / ECA (Sophomore Year)

In previous years, the State of Indiana has mandated a graduation requirement known as the End-of-Course-Assessment (ECA). Among the requirements that students must fulfill to earn a diploma from Paoli High School, students must pass both the Algebra I and English 10 ECAs. Students will also take the Biology I ECA but it is not required to graduate. During the 2015-16 school year, the State of Indiana is transitioning to a new version of the test called ISTEP.

All sophomores students will participate in the ISTEP this year for both English and math. However, since the previous End-of-Course-Assessment is still the graduation requirement for students, ECAs must be taken by students enrolled in either English 10, Algebra I, and/or Biology. These exams will be administered in the spring.

PSAT/NMSQT (Sophomore / Junior Year)

The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is given to all current sophomores and juniors at PHS. Students have the ability through their test scores to qualify for National Merit Scholarships during their junior year.

There is no registration to complete beforehand. The PSAT is given the 3rd Wednesday in October and students should receive their results at the beginning of the 2nd semester.

Students are also provided with their test booklet to go over their answers as a preparation tool for the SAT. Please feel free to contact your student’s counselor if any further information is needed or visit www.collegeboard.com.

SAT I (Junior / Senior Year)

PHS code 152745

SAT I (Scholastic Aptitude Test) is a standardized, timed aptitude test used widely by college admissions counselors in the admission process. It consists of math, critical reading and writing sections. It is offered eight times per year nationally. Students may use calculators on the math sections. Generally, we encourage juniors to take the SAT in the spring and seniors to take or retake the SAT in October or November. Students may take the test on any test date. If the test is taken more than once, many colleges and universities will consider the best scores from each section and not just from one testing session. Sophomores also may take the SAT but we would recommend they at least sit for the PSAT first before they take the SAT. In addition, PrepMe, an SAT prep program, is available on Naviance. Please visit www.sat.collegeboard.org for more information.

ACT (Junior / Senior Year)

PHS code 152745

The ACT (American College Testing) is a timed standardized test widely used by college admission counselors in the admission process. The test consists of 4 sections: math, reading, grammar and science reasoning with an optional 5th section of writing. We highly encourage our students to take an ACT and SAT before the start of their senior year. The ACT is as widely accepted for college admission as is the SAT. Advanced Placement Tests (AP)

Paoli High School offers several Advanced Placement (AP) courses. These courses are college level courses and the curriculum is designed and monitored by The College Board. Students in these courses are expected to participate in the Advanced Placement Testing Program implemented in May of each year. Students in these courses have the opportunity, through the Advanced Placement test results, to earn college credit for coursework completed in high school. The academic rigor of these courses necessitates some pre-requisites or recommendations be met for enrollment as outlined in our course guide. Students enrolled in AP courses will receive instructions on how to register for their AP exam(s) and the costs involved with the test from their AP teacher. For more information please see the College Board’s website:
